Lunar calendar 2027: every full moon, new moon and eclipse

Written and reviewed by The Kriya Yogi · Updated 25 September 2026

A practice calendar for 2027, computed from astronomy rather than copied from lists. Each month has its own page with times for every US zone, London, India and Sydney, the traditional names, the Purnima festival it carries, and a small practice to mark it.

Eclipses 2027

  • Annular solar eclipse — Sat, Feb 6, 3:59 PM UTC

The ring of fire crosses southern South America — Chile, Argentina and Uruguay — before heading out over the South Atlantic toward West Africa. Not visible from North America.

  • Penumbral lunar eclipse — Sat, Feb 20, 11:12 PM UTC

A faint shading on the full moon, visible across the Americas, Europe and Africa. Most casual observers will not notice it.

  • Penumbral lunar eclipse (very slight) — Sun, Jul 18, 4:02 PM UTC

A barely-there grazing of Earth's outer shadow, best placed for Asia and Australia.

  • Total solar eclipse — Mon, Aug 2, 10:06 AM UTC

The eclipse of the decade for the Old World. Totality tracks from the Strait of Gibraltar across southern Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt — up to about six and a half minutes near Luxor — then Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia. Not visible from the Americas.

  • Penumbral lunar eclipse — Tue, Aug 17, 7:13 AM UTC

A subtle dimming of the full moon, best placed for the Pacific, Americas' west coast and East Asia.

Never look at a partial solar eclipse without certified ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses.

Wolf Moon

January 2027

January 2027 opens dark: the new moon on January 7 gives the first real blank page of the year, and the full Wolf Moon two weeks later is one of the closest full moons of 2027 — noticeably bright on a clear winter night. It is a good month for beginning something small and specific rather than something large and vague, and the sky itself cooperates: long nights, crisp air, and a moon that stays up from dusk to dawn.

Snow Moon

February 2027

February 2027 is the busiest lunar month of the year. The new moon on February 6 is also an annular solar eclipse and marks Lunar New Year; two weeks later the full Snow Moon is brushed by a penumbral lunar eclipse. Between the two, it is a month that rewards paying attention to the sky even if you never leave your street.

Worm Moon

March 2027

The March equinox lands on March 20, 2027, and the full Worm Moon follows two days later — so this month's lunar cycle straddles the turn into spring. It is one of the more symbolically loaded months of the yoga year: the axis tips, day and night briefly balance, and much of the world lights bonfires for the festival that follows.

Pink Moon

April 2027

April's full moon is the Pink Moon — named for early wild phlox, not its colour. In 2027 it falls on the evening of April 20 in the Americas, with the new moon on April 6. The month sits squarely in spring for the Northern Hemisphere and marks the start of a nine-night observance in the Hindu calendar.

Flower Moon

May 2027

The May full moon is the most important full moon of the Buddhist year: Vesak, or Buddha Purnima, remembering the Buddha's birth, awakening and death, all said to have occurred on this same lunar day in different years. In 2027 it peaks on May 20, a good anchor for a full day of quieter practice.

Strawberry Moon

June 2027

June 2027 brings the Strawberry Moon, the summer solstice and International Day of Yoga within three days of one another — the natural centre of a yoga year, and a rare stretch when the sky, the calendar and the practice world all point to the same few days.

Buck Moon

July 2027

The July full moon is Guru Purnima, the day yoga and Vedic traditions set aside to honour the teacher. In 2027 it falls on July 18 and is also the smallest full moon of the year, a coincidence with no significance beyond making the night sky slightly less dramatic than usual.

Sturgeon Moon

August 2027

August 2027 holds the most talked-about sky event of the year: the total solar eclipse of August 2, with up to about six and a half minutes of totality near Luxor, Egypt. It is followed by the Sturgeon Moon and a second new moon on August 31, giving the month an unusually full lunar calendar.

Harvest Moon

September 2027

Because the September 15 full moon falls closer to the September 23 equinox than the October one does, it takes the name Harvest Moon in 2027 — a title that shifts between September and October depending on the year's exact timing.

Hunter's Moon

October 2027

October brings the Hunter's Moon on the 15th — in India, Sharad Purnima — and a new moon on the 29th that sits close to Diwali, making this one of the more festival-dense months of the whole lunar calendar.

Beaver Moon

November 2027

November's Beaver Moon falls on the night of November 13 in the Americas. In India it is Kartika Purnima, when the ghats of Varanasi are lit with lamps for Dev Deepawali, one of the most visually striking festival nights of the year.

Cold Moon

December 2027

The year ends with the Cold Moon on December 13, the winter solstice on December 22 and a final new moon on December 27 — a clean frame for looking back at 2027, and about as neat an alignment of sky and calendar as any month offers.
