Full moon & new moon in November 2027
Written and reviewed by The Kriya Yogi · Updated 25 September 2026
November's Beaver Moon falls on the night of November 13 in the Americas. In India it is Kartika Purnima, when the ghats of Varanasi are lit with lamps for Dev Deepawali, one of the most visually striking festival nights of the year.

In the sky
Peak is 03:26 UTC on November 14 — 10:26 p.m. Eastern on November 13, after clocks have gone back. The Moon is climbing toward winter heights and sits in Taurus near the Pleiades. The new moon comes on the evening of November 27 in US time zones, giving a dark sky for the Leonid meteor shower, which typically peaks around November 17–18 with a modest but reliable rate of meteors in a clear pre-dawn sky. Early winter evenings also bring Orion back to full prominence by late in the month.
Names and traditions
Kartika Purnima is one of the holiest full moons in Hindu, Jain and Sikh calendars: Dev Deepawali in Varanasi, when hundreds of thousands of lamps are lit along the Ganges ghats; the start of the Pushkar fair, a major camel and cattle fair alongside religious bathing; and Guru Nanak Jayanti for Sikhs (by the lunar reckoning most gurdwaras follow), marking the birth of the first Sikh Guru. The Beaver Moon name comes from the season for setting traps before the freeze, a practical marker from fur-trapping communities in the northern United States and Canada.
A practice for November
Dark evenings: shift the practice earlier
With the time change, many people find it easier to practise before dinner than late at night, when the early darkness can otherwise sap motivation.
Kartika Purnima: a lamp and a bath
A warm bath and a single lamp by water — a household echo of the Ganges ceremony, achievable anywhere regardless of proximity to a sacred river.
Thanksgiving week: sit before the meal
Five minutes of quiet gratitude before a large, busy gathering changes the day, and is easy to do even amid travel and family obligations.
Guru Nanak Jayanti: service
The Sikh emphasis on seva, selfless service, offers a practice of its own: one act of unasked-for help during the week of the full moon.
Moon phases have no proven effect on health or mood; these are markers for reflection, as they have been in many traditions.
