Full moon & new moon in June 2027

Written and reviewed by The Kriya Yogi · Updated 25 September 2026

June 2027 brings the Strawberry Moon, the summer solstice and International Day of Yoga within three days of one another — the natural centre of a yoga year, and a rare stretch when the sky, the calendar and the practice world all point to the same few days.

In the sky

The full moon peaks at 00:45 UTC on June 19, which is the evening of June 18 in the Americas (8:45 p.m. Eastern). Near the solstice the full moon sits opposite a high Sun, so for northern observers it hangs very low across the southern sky, often amber. The solstice is June 21 at 14:10 UTC. Because the Sun barely sets at this latitude extreme, June nights are short and twilight lingers; this is a poor month for faint deep-sky objects but a fine one for simply noticing how long the light lasts, especially the further north you live. Farther south, the Southern Hemisphere is heading into its own longest nights and best stargazing season.

Names and traditions

International Day of Yoga has been held on June 21 since the United Nations declared it in 2014, chosen for the solstice, which the resolution notes is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. In India, Jyeshtha Purnima is associated with Vat Purnima, when married women in parts of western and northern India tie a thread around a banyan tree for their husbands' wellbeing, and Snana Yatra, the ceremonial bathing of the deities at Puri before the Jagannath temple's annual chariot festival. The Strawberry Moon name comes from the North American Algonquian berry harvest, timed to the short strawberry-picking season in June.

A practice for June

  1. New moon, Jun 4: plan the solstice

Decide now how you will mark June 21 — a class, a sunrise sit, or a slower practice at home. Planning ahead of a busy season helps the day actually happen.

  2. Full moon: a cooling evening

Summer suits cooling practices: slower movement, a long exhale, Shitali breath if it suits you and your teacher has shown it to you safely.

  3. Solstice / Yoga Day

Practise at sunrise, when the light is longest-lived. Keep it moderate; the day is a celebration, not a test, and community classes are often more valuable than solo intensity.

  4. Midyear check-in

The solstice is a natural halfway marker for the calendar year. A brief written review of the January intention fits naturally here.

Moon phases have no proven effect on health or mood; these are markers for reflection, as they have been in many traditions.
