Yoga Mat for a Small Practice Space

The short answer

In a small room, mat width and storage footprint matter more than any other spec. Our cork and linen mats are a standard 27-inch-class width, while the rubber mat comes in both a narrower 68 cm and a wider 80 cm option, so it's worth measuring your actual floor space before choosing between them.

What matters for this

Cork mat width
27 in (approx. 69 cm)
Linen mat width
Standard width, similar to cork
Rubber mat widths
68 cm or 80 cm
Length (all three)
183 cm / 72 in
Storage
Rolls for upright or under-bed storage
Latex note
Natural rubber base contains latex

Why width matters more than thickness in a small room

In a cramped space, the question usually isn't whether a mat is thick enough, it's whether it fits between the furniture at all, and whether your arms clear the edges in poses like wide-legged forward fold or side plank. All our mats are the same 5 mm thickness, so the real decision for a small space is which width leaves you enough room without eating into the rest of the floor.

Choosing the narrower option on purpose

If your floor space is genuinely tight, the narrower 68 cm rubber mat, or the similarly sized cork and linen mats, leave more clearance around the edges of a small room than the 80 cm rubber mat would. This matters most for standing poses with a wide stance, where a too-narrow room next to a too-wide mat can mean stepping off the edge mid-pose.

When the wider mat is still worth it

If you have at least a little extra width to spare — say, enough floor for the mat plus 20–30 cm either side — the 80 cm rubber mat gives noticeably more room for seated work, lying poses and transitions, which some practitioners find worth the extra footprint even in an otherwise small room. It comes down to measuring what you actually have rather than assuming a wider mat won't fit.

Storing a mat when space is tight

All three mats roll for storage rather than folding flat, so plan for a cylindrical space — behind a door, under a bed, or in a corner — roughly 69 to 80 cm long, depending on which width you choose. The included carry strap on the cork and linen mats also makes it easier to hang a rolled mat on a hook rather than leaving it on the floor between sessions.

Choose something else if…

  • Anyone with ample floor space who doesn't need to think about width at all.
  • Anyone with a latex allergy, since the base of all three mats is natural rubber.

Questions buyers ask

+ Which mat is narrowest?
The rubber mat's 68 cm option and the cork and linen mats, all around 68-69 cm wide, are narrower than the rubber mat's 80 cm option.
+ Will an 80 cm mat be too wide for a small room?
It depends on your actual floor space — measure what's available next to furniture and walls before choosing. The extra 12 cm over the narrower option can matter in a genuinely tight room.
+ Do any of the mats fold for easier storage in a small space?
No, all three roll rather than fold. A carry strap is included with the cork and linen mats, which helps with hanging storage in a tight space.
