A Wider Yoga Mat for Bigger Bodies and Wide Stances

Written and reviewed by The Kriya Yogi · Updated 2 October 2026

The short answer

If a standard-width mat has you regularly stepping off the long edges during wide-legged poses, the 80 cm version of our flow natural rubber mat gives real extra room over the usual 68 cm or 27-inch widths. It's currently the only wider option we offer; our cork and linen mats stay at the narrower standard width.

What a narrow mat actually costs you in practice

A standard-width mat is built around an average stance, so poses like wide-legged forward fold, warrior II or a generous squat can leave your feet landing past the long edges. That's not just an aesthetic issue — one foot half on, half off the mat changes the surface under it mid-pose, which affects stability more than most people expect. For a bigger body or a naturally wide stance, this happens more often, which is exactly the gap the 80 cm mat is meant to close.

Why we only offer the wider size in rubber, not cork or linen

At present the extra-wide 80 cm option exists only on the flow natural rubber mat; our cork and linen mats are made at the standard 27-inch width. If surface preference and width both matter to you, you may have to compromise — choosing the wider rubber mat over the texture of cork or linen, or accepting the narrower width if cork or linen's surface matters more to your practice.

Thickness and weight don't change with width

The 80 cm mat keeps the same 5 mm thickness as the rest of the range, so you are getting more surface area, not more cushioning. It is also a larger, heavier piece of rubber than the 68 cm version, which is worth knowing if you plan to carry it often — a wider natural rubber mat is noticeably less portable than a folding foam mat.

Setting up a wider mat at home

An 80 cm mat takes up meaningfully more floor space than a standard one, which matters in a small practice corner. Before buying for width alone, it's worth measuring the space you actually practise in — there's little point in extra lateral room if the mat then overlaps furniture or a doorway during longer poses.

Choose something else if…

  • Anyone who wants the extra width specifically with a cork or linen surface — not currently offered.
  • Small practice spaces where an 80 cm mat would overlap furniture during poses.

Questions buyers ask

+ How much wider is the 80 cm mat really?
About 12 cm more than the standard 68 cm width, and a similar amount over the 27-inch cork and linen mats. It's a noticeable difference in wide-legged and lunge-based poses.
+ Is the wider mat heavier to carry?
Yes — more rubber means more weight, on top of natural rubber already being heavier than a folding foam travel mat. It suits home or studio use more than daily carrying.
+ Can I get the cork mat in 80 cm?
Not currently. The extra-wide option is only available on the flow natural rubber mat; cork and linen mats are offered at the standard 27-inch width.
