Viśuddha — 'the very pure', from vi (intensifier) and śuddha (purified) — is the fifth centre of the classical six, located at the throat. Its element is space itself: the openness in which sound travels.

What the name means
Viśuddha means especially pure or purified. Commentators connect the name with the purity of ākāśa — space, the subtlest of the five elements — and with the purification of speech that the centre is said to govern.
What the source text describes
The Ṣaṭ-cakra-nirūpaṇa describes viśuddha as a lotus of sixteen petals — the petals carry the sixteen Sanskrit vowels, the pure sounds — smoky-purple in hue. Within it is a white circular region, round as the full moon, representing space, with the seed syllable Haṃ and a white elephant. The flat blue of modern charts is again a simplification of a richer picture.
Space, speech and truth
Space is the medium of sound, so the throat centre gathers themes of voice, listening and truthful speech. In the Isha presentation, viśuddha is linked with power — the power of the word. Modern charts add communication and self-expression. All of this is coherent symbolism; what it is not is endocrinology. The thyroid gland sits in the throat, and modern writers love the parallel, but no chakra practice diagnoses or treats thyroid disease.
How traditions approach it
Classical engagement works with the seed syllable, chanting, and visualisation — mantra belongs naturally to the throat. Honest modern equivalents: chanting or singing, reading aloud, periods of deliberate silence, and the practice of saying what is true without cruelty. Jihvā śodhana, the classical tongue cleansing of the haṭha texts, is a simple morning hygiene practice in the same neighbourhood of care.
What we can honestly say
Viśuddha is a well-documented centre whose symbolism of space and pure sound is among the most beautiful in the texts. It is not a thyroid map, and persistent hoarseness, throat lumps or voice changes deserve a doctor, not a mantra prescription.
