Quartz Crystal Singing Bowl — 432 Hz or 440 Hz

A frosted quartz bowl that holds one long, clean tone. Struck once at the beginning of practice, it marks the boundary between the day and the sitting — the old function of the bell, the conch, the temple gong: attention, gathered by a single sound. In the classical texts the practitioner is asked to listen inwardly — nada anusandhana, the tracing of subtle sound, described in the fourth chapter of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. An outer tone is not that inner sound, but it teaches the same habit: to follow one thing until it fades completely. How it is used Rest the bowl on its cushion on a firm surface. Strike the rim once with the suede striker and let the note run to silence before striking again. To draw a continuous tone, press the striker to the rim and circle slowly and evenly.
